Lighthouses Challenge, Manx 100 and End to End promise a feast of summer cycling

Thu, 06 Jul 2017

Starting in early July, pedal power and lycra are set to take pole position, as far as mass participation outdoor pursuits in the Isle of Man are concerned during the summer of 2017.

Yes, we’re talking cycling.

Microgaming Lighthouses Challenge – July 9th

The first of three top notch, varied and well-established events gets under way on Sunday July 9th with the annual Microgaming Lighthouses Challenge.

This is the Premier Cycle Sportive in the Isle of Man calendar which takes in the Island’s various lighthouses (where possible) and, with it, the opportunity to admire much of the Island’s spectacular coastline.

Nearly 400 determined participants entered in the 2016 event and it’s anticipated that number will be surpassed this year – the seventh time the event has been staged.

You can choose short, medium or long routes (37, 57 and 100 miles respectively) – the latter is certainly not for the faint-hearted – with the full route taking in around 2700 metres of climbs. You can enter individually or in teams.

This is a really sociable, well supported event where there are plenty of feed stations on the various routes. Entries close at midnight on July 2 and the Challenge starts at 8am prompt on the day itself.

The Manx 100 – July 30th

If you like extreme cycling – then this could be for just what you’re looking for! The Manx 100 is a gruelling 100 mile or 100km ultra marathon bike challenge, where you get to choose the level of pain you wish to endure!!

Designed to test every riders’ fitness, mental strength and endurance, the full 100 mile course includes some 16,000 feet of climbs – that’s more than the total height of Europe’s highest mountain, Mont Blanc - with the shorter 100km event ascending a not insignificant 3500km!

Growing in popularity each year, the Manx 100 is certainly not an armchair bike ride. There are no organiser-led feed stations, no bike shops open, nothing in the way of mechanical assistance and very few stores en route. Other than a couple of bag drop points and two water checkpoints, you’re basically on your own. It’s basically you and the unspoilt Manx countryside for company - so planning and self sufficiency is essential!  Tempted? We thought you would be!

The Manx Telecom End2End Challenge - September 10th

Last but not least and billed as Europe’s biggest and best single day mountain bike event, September sees the 19th edition of the Manx Telecom End2End Challenge. It’s easy to see why.

This unique race, which is open to individual entrants or teams of up to four, now attracts around 2000 cyclists of all abilities. It covers a formidable 75km route from one end of the Island to the other – on all types of terrain - incorporating a mix of gruelling climbs, moorland paths, country lanes, fast roads and forest single tracks.

There’s also a dramatic seaside finale in pictureque Port Erin, involving a sweeping descent from the cliff tops at Mount Bradda, before riders finally get to climb off their bikes at the finish line under the archway alongside the world famous Bushys Pub – in time for a well-earned pint!

If you haven’t yet entered, read on…

People come from all over the UK, Ireland and further afield to take part in these great cycling extravaganzas, but if you have yet to enter and need to book your travel and accommodation for any of them, then Isle of Man Events can sort everything out for you.
